About Gather Food Hall

Gather Food Hall represents a new chapter for Philadelphia's food hall landscape. Unlike traditional food courts focused solely on transactions, Gather was designed from the ground up as a community gathering space that happens to serve exceptional food. The venue occupies the ground floor of the historic Bulletin Building, constructed in 1955 as the home of The Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper—once the largest evening newspaper in the United States.

Brandywine Realty Trust partnered with Hospitality HQ, led by award-winning chef Akhtar Nawab, to curate a vendor lineup that balances established Philadelphia favorites with emerging culinary entrepreneurs. This collaboration with Gather Food Hall Management—a Philadelphia-based organization including FNB+, JEME Agency, and the nonprofit Believe In Students—ensures the food hall serves a higher purpose beyond dining, addressing food insecurity and providing business development resources to underrepresented chefs.

The Bulletin Building Legacy

The Bulletin Building's history as a hub for innovation, communication, and ideas makes it the perfect home for Gather. Bell Butler Design & Architecture preserved this legacy through newspaper-inspired design elements, vintage accents, and historical graphics that honor the building's printing press past while creating a vibrant modern dining space. The design integrates eclectic mix of lighting features and thoughtful details that bridge the 20th-century newsroom aesthetic with contemporary hospitality.

Just as The Philadelphia Bulletin once connected the city through conversation and information, Gather now connects diverse communities—office workers, Drexel and UPenn students, Amtrak and SEPTA commuters, and University City residents—through food, drink, and shared experiences.

Social Mission: Addressing Food Insecurity

Gather partners with Believe In Students, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring aspiring college students have their basic needs met. Through a 10-year, $250,000 commitment from Brandywine Realty Trust, Gather aims to provide 5,000 free and low-cost meals annually to food-insecure college students in Philadelphia. According to research, 1 in 4 college students experiences food insecurity—a crisis that impacts academic performance, mental health, and long-term success.

The program offers stigma-free meal access while connecting students with broader support resources. Diners can contribute directly to this mission, creating a virtuous cycle where every meal purchased helps feed a student in need. Traci Kirtley, Executive Director of Believe In Students, emphasizes the program's holistic approach to student wellness beyond just providing meals.

Supporting Culinary Entrepreneurs

Gather provides a low-barrier entry point for emerging chefs and restaurant professionals who face resource gaps and lack professional mentorship. Two vendors received $25,000 grants from the city, low-interest loans, and access to a comprehensive mentoring program led by experienced restaurateurs including Jeff Benjamin (CEO of Federal Donuts, founder of Vetri Cucina) and Chef Akhtar Nawab.

For vendors like Mucho Perú—which operated as a pop-up for two years before joining Gather—the food hall offers a permanent home without the prohibitive startup costs of traditional brick-and-mortar restaurants. Sahbyy Food, which gained fame at the Southeast Asian Market at FDR Park, uses Gather as its first official brick-and-mortar location. This model helps small businesses test concepts, cultivate professional practices, and build customer bases before expanding further.

Location & Transit Connectivity

Gather's location at Schuylkill Yards—a 14-acre, $3.5 billion mixed-use innovation district—provides unmatched accessibility. Positioned directly across from 30th Street Station (Philadelphia's second-busiest transit hub), Gather serves Amtrak passengers, regional rail commuters, and SEPTA riders entering University City from Center City.

The Schuylkill Yards development by Brandywine Realty Trust in partnership with Drexel University includes new office buildings, life sciences labs (including Spark Therapeutics), luxury residences, retail spaces, and significant public green spaces like Drexel Square. Gather anchors the neighborhood's ground-level retail, surrounded by complementary dining options including Walnut Street Café, Sunset Social, The Post, and Garces Trading Company from Iron Chef José Garcés.

Design & Atmosphere

The 13,000 square-foot space features communal indoor seating with newspaper-inspired design elements, including vintage printing press graphics, industrial lighting, and a warm color palette that balances historical reverence with modern comfort. The Bulletin Bar serves as the centerpiece, where patrons can order drinks and socialize while watching games on large-format screens.

Outdoor seating extends into Drexel Square during warmer months, creating a lively al fresco dining experience. The design encourages lingering—whether for morning coffee and donuts, lunch meetings, afternoon study sessions, happy hour cocktails, or evening gatherings with friends.

Operating Model & Hours

Gather operates daily with staggered vendor hours. Federal Donuts opens at 8:00 AM for breakfast service, while other vendors begin at 11:00 AM. The food hall stays open until 10:00 PM Sunday through Thursday, extending to 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday for late-night dining and bar service.

The venue hosts regular programming including student-focused learning sessions, community events, and cultural activations in partnership with local organizations. The inaugural event was held in collaboration with the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, setting the tone for Gather's role as a cultural hub beyond just dining.

Visitor Tips

Visit during off-peak hours (2-5 PM) for the most relaxed seating availability. Federal Donuts breakfast (8-11 AM) attracts morning commuters—arrive early for the freshest donuts. Happy hour at Bulletin Bar draws strong after-work crowds from nearby offices and labs. Parking is available in the Schuylkill Yards garage; alternatively, the location's proximity to 30th Street Station makes it ideal for transit access.
